Maths that builds long-term understanding

Maths lessons begin with a daily review where students review previously taught content. These sessions aim to ensure that new information is effectively transferred to long-term memory through regular retrieval practice.

New content in mathematics is explicitly taught, and rich tasks are used to extend and develop knowledge once the basics are embedded.

Making mistakes in all learning areas is seen as an opportunity to learn, grow and develop. Students are encouraged to discuss their thinking and the mental processes they use to solve maths equations, and to reflect on challenges or misconceptions they faced.

Maths lessons at Girgarre Primary School are supported and supportive spaces for students to thrive, grow and learn.
